    Marc Innerst

    York (Pennsylvania, USA) • 1957
    Marc Innerst © Marc Innerst
Mark Innerst was born in 1957 and grew up in the small industrial town of York, Pennsylavania. After graduating from Kutztown State College in Pennsylvania, he moved to New York in the early eighties where he interned at The Kitchen (where he would have his first solo exhibition in 1982) and worked as personal assistant to the American expressionist painter Robert Longo.
New York would be his home and his inspiration for the next 25 years. Innerst has a special penchant for painting the atmosphere of streets striped by the light that saturates the buildings and the modernist skyscrapers of America’s Golden Age. At the foot of the buildings, in the lower part of the canvas, microscopic human beings bustle about, walking, talking, doing business, while the real action unfolds much higher, in the sky, suspended between the skyscrapers. Innerst’s sky is never an empty space absent of material: on the contrary, it is a living and colorful entity, immense and emotional.
His most recent paintings describe the different places where he lives, Philadelphia and Cape May, while remaining faithful to the very personal and indefinable idea of “landscape” distinctive of his art. It is an image of a space that actually exists, but is also transcendent, where light is impalpable but capable of blurring human subjects and incidental objects, thanks to its own intrinsic nature.
Innerst's works have been exhibited in the United States and Europe, and are part of major public collections throughout world including the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (NY), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

Lives and works between Philadelphia and Cape May (New Jersey, USA).
